We at Roughhewn People are very excited not only to be launching our new website, but to have our first event featuring a guest artist as the focal point! Artist Joel Schoon-Tanis is an artist from Western Michigan, and Adam Nelson, our creative director, has a few "small world" connections with friends and colleagues of Joel, leading to what hopes to be a beautiful weekend of art, creating, teaching and fellowship. From Joel's website:
Joel Schoon Tanis’ painting explores God’s creation and stories from a whimsical child-like perspective.
Joel is a celebrated painter who has shown his work around the Unites States — from Michigan to Florida to Colorado to Washington D.C.. Joel has also shown his work as far away as Kenya where he did an art show in Nairobi to raise money for the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife. You may also like to know that while in Kenya he kissed a giraffe. His murals can be found in many schools, children’s hospitals and churches (including murals in both Kenya and Zambia).
As an illustrator, Joel has contributed to more than half a dozen books for children. Most notably, he illustrated the New International Reader’s Version Kid’s Study Bible for Zondervan. He won the “Moonbeam Children’s Book Award” for his book Swing! In the last year he has released three new books including, 40: The Biblical Story, A, B, See by Joel Schoon Tanis and As Real As it Gets, by Amanda Barton, Natalie Hart and Joel Schoon Tanis.
In addition to his artistic pursuits, he is also the creator and writer of Come On Over!, a children’s television program that has won two National Telly awards, and 13 regional Emmy awards, including one for Joel as host of the show. The show has had such special guests as Jars of Clay, Fred Willard (Everybody Loves Raymond,Best in Show), Ruth Buzzi (Laugh In, Sesame Street), Luis Avolos (Electric Company), Vicki Lewis (Newsradio, Finding Nemo), and Jason Hanson, the kicker for the Detroit Lions. By the way, Ruth Buzzi is as wonderful as you’d think she’d be.
Joel loves to travel, read, sing (he was in this cool band called the Voice for a solid decade), be outdoors, and play with his female-centric household, i.e. his cool teacher wife Dr. Kathy Schoon-Tanis and firecracker daughters Harper and Beatrix (both of whom are named for great literary icons).
Be inviting people to come here a good word from Joel, hear live music, participate in an artists workshop, enjoy food and fall drinks, and get to know other's in our community who desire to reimagine our world through creative living! Event is at 1330 S Courtland Ave, Park Ridge, IL, 60068 from 3pm-5:30pm
